Humanity often normalizes injustice and discrimination when they persist over time. These injustices become entrenched, accepted, and seemingly impossible to challenge.
As a Ukrainian, I know this intimately. Our struggles for land and freedom span centuries. Through stories from my grandfathers, photographs of great-grandfathers, and inherited memories of famine and genocide, I’ve learned how history so often urges us to forget, not to learn.
But artists are keepers of discomfort. We refuse to let silence win. In books, on canvas, through color and form — we hold the tension, the memory, the resistance.
In the artwork “Purple”, I portray life in undiluted, concentrated colors — as if white paint has been withheld and pastel tones can’t describe raw truths. These colors reflect the weariness of people who’ve spent generations resisting empires. Their roots are soaked in the hues of emotion, dignity, and unflinching presence.
