Gloss – Fine Art Portrait Celebrating Black Women’s Inner Light
Inspiration for the painting “Gloss”
The painting Gloss was inspired by the relentless spirit of Black women who shine brightly every day, no matter their challenges. This contemporary portrait celebrates their inner glow, resilience, and ability to create vibrant worlds and communities full of rhythm, energy, and authenticity. I observe these women often; for me, they are a constant source of motion and vitality, even in stillness. They carry a light that isn’t always visible to everyone. That’s why many of my figurative paintings tell the stories of Black women—brilliant, radiant, and full of life. They inspire me deeply.
Gloss holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first paintings that marked a clear direction in my artistic journey. The rich palette of purples, blues, and magentas reflects a broad emotional spectrum—from calm strength to bold creativity. Expressive brushstrokes bring movement and life to the piece, capturing the essence of freedom and individuality. The vivid emphasis on the lips highlights the power of a woman’s voice—her presence and expression.
Empowerment and Femininity
This work is more than a portrait; it symbolizes Black female empowerment and feminine strength. The woman in Gloss doesn’t wait for permission to shine—she does, she manifests. She embodies beauty, presence, and quiet power in every moment. Through this painting, I hope viewers feel the force of self-belief, creative fire, and the will to build a better world.
The original Gloss painting is still available for purchase. After being exhibited worldwide, it has finally returned to my studio.
Prints of this piece have already found homes in many countries, and the warm, global response truly moves me. Collectors often tell me that this work makes them feel seen and that I feel like part of their community. That means the world to me.
A Symbol of Hope and the Future
With her soft glow and vibrance, the heroine of this painting becomes a symbol of hope. She dreams, creates, and prays for a world where everyone can flourish. And she dances—my heroines always dance. Gloss invites us to carry our light with dignity and courage and to remember that the spirit of joy and possibility endures even in the face of hardship.
